Associated Press – May 20, 1962:
Young Cassius Clay of Louisville stopped Billy Daniels of New York on cuts in the seventh round Saturday night of a battle of unbeaten heavyweights at St. Nicholas Arena.

Referee Mark Conn halted the contest at 2:21 of the seventh of the television fight because of a nasty cut over Daniels’ left eye.

“It hampered his vision,” said the referee. Daniels was gashed over the eye in the third round and bled freely the rest of the way.

Dr. Sam Swetnick had visited Daniels’ corner after the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds.

Although the 5-1 favorite Clay had a good lead, he didn’t show too well against the 25-year-old barber who twice hurt the cocky Kentuckian with long rights to the jaw.

The 20-year-old Clay had predicted “Daniels will fall in five” but he couldn’t even floor his 6-foot-4 189-pound opponent. Clay weighed 196.
